Starbucks Sustainable Design and Building

Saw this piece from Rocky Mountain Institute’s high performance building series. Starbucks talks about their sustainable design practices.

They have 14,000 stores, so it makes a lot of sense to go sustainable design and building. Implementing strategies to help lower (read: control) their energy use that would affect their bottom line.

The results:

  • using daylighting strategy, it reduces the electricity use
  • 20% of electricity comes from renewable energy

Besides implementing techniques to reduce electricity use, I’m glad that they put emphasis on indoor air quality also. Because people spend a considerable amount of time inside their stores.
