How a One-Person Nonprofit Brings the Face and Voice of Homelessness to Mainstream

InvisiblePeople.tv is a one-person nonprofit organization with mission to bring the voice and face of homelessness, founded in 2008 by Mark Horvath, who is a former homeless himself.

So how can a one-person nonprofit outfit fight homelessness and make a dent?

In this post, you’ll discover the three ways this nonprofit work the social media to communicate its message.

#1. Leverage the use of social media tools

Use social media because it’s free,” says Mark Horvath in one of the Invisible video clips. Since the launched of his organization, Mark Horvath and his Invisible People have leveraged the use of social media tools to bring stories of homelessness to the mainstream. The communication method works two-ways: with mainstream and with(in) the homeless community itself.

As a communication tool, social media is used to reach out multiple layers of stakeholders, including those who are homeless because they are also online. He says that if you are looking for a homeless person, Facebook is a good place to start.

A large portion of IP’s stories are video interviews with homeless individuals which then posted on its YouTube video-blog (vlog). In addition to YouTube, where videos originated (the hub), links from video clips are shared through their Facebook, Twitter, blog, and Google+ channels (spokes). If on YouTube channel you get to hear interviews, on its Flickr and Instagram accounts you get to see pictures of those interviewed.

So technically one (same) content can be seen multiple times via a variety of social networking sites because each site has different audience, followers, culture, and demographics.

The Long Tail of a Tweet

    I went to interview Danielle Brigida (@starfocus), the Social Media Manager over at the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), a few weeks ago. Danielle and I go way back. We hadn’t really see each other for years up until that meeting. But we connected via Twitter. So after the meeting, we continued conversing – online. Found out later that she’s retweeted (RT) my tweet.

    From that point, the tweet got RT’d three times, according to Hootsuite’s data. This was very unusual. In my metrics, my tweets don’t really get much RT’d. If they get once or twice show time, that is consider good.

Steal this Presentation! Seriously.

Doing a lot of presentation? Make it a CRAP.

C= CONTRAST

Text and images are all the same size and style is extremely boring and not communicative. Add some contrast to make it interesting.

R= REPETITION

Repeat colors, fonts and images throughout your presentation for a cohesive feel (remember color mix?). Each new topic slide should have related styles so that your audience knows you are moving into a new point. 

A= ALIGNMENT

Text and alignment on each side should be visually connected. Nothing should be out of place.

P= Proximity

Related elements should be grouped together.

Sustainability for Business: Reason #2

REASON #2: RESOURCE CONSTRAINT

The other week, we talked about the number one reason for business to start thinking about sustainability. That is growing population. Today’s world population is approximately at 6.8 billion people (and counting) with 2 billion people in the emerging middle class.

So we have rising population, increasing living standard and higher resources demand to deal with.

As more people climbing up the middle class ladder consumer consumption also goes up. Higher consumer consumption puts more stress on the existing social and economical infrastructure threatening the supplies of food, natural resources such as fresh water, energy, wood and fish.

RESOURCES AT RISK

Forget about the demand for fossil-fuel based for awhile. Let’s just see where we get our resources from. Then you understand why we have a big problem.

OIL and GAS

Via McKinsey Quarterly:

Just four countriesIran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela hold some 50 percent of known oil and gas reserves. Nationally-owned companies now control 85 percent of them. Many of the key providers are highly exposed to broader political instability, which makes security of supply a major risk

Security of supply affects market pricing.

RAW MATERIALS

Source of materials include whatever nature provide to people and business. Fresh water, fish, food, energy and wood.

Demand vs. supply

According to Global Footprint Network:

In 2006, humanity’s Ecological Footprint worldwide was 17.1 billion hectares (gha); with world’s population at 6.6 billion people the average person’s Footprint was 2.6 global hectares. But there were only 11.9 billion gha of biocapacity available that year, or 1.8 gha per person. This overshoot of approximately 40% means that in 2006 humanity used the equivalent of 1.4 Earths to support its consumption. It took Earth approximately a year and four months to regenerate resources used by humanity (that’s us) in that year.

To put it in a plain language: We’re screwed! We’ve overdrawn our natural resources. Basically, we are in the red. In monetary language, we spend more than we can afford. We are in deficit.

Sustainability, It’s All a Matter of Definition
